What looks to be the biggest area of need at this point for the Longhorns to address out of the transfer portal is along the defensive front. More specifically, it looks like Texas is going after more impact edge rushers in the transfer portal.

Last offseason, Texas tried to throw numbers at the problem in terms of depth along the defensive front. But that strategy didn’t work out too well in the end with the likes of Ben Davis, Ray Thornton, Ovie Oghoufo, etc., making a minimal impact.

Texas is looking to turn the page in that regard by landing someone that is a bit more proven at his previous destination such as the TCU Horned Frogs redshirt junior edge rusher/defensive end Ochaun Mathis. A former recruiting target of the Longhorns for a bit, Mathis could stay in-state by landing with Texas if this is his next destination.

All five expert 247Sports transfer Crystal Ball Predictions in for Mathis have his commitment out of the portal projected to go to Texas. Considering the fact that Mathis put his name in the transfer portal on Jan. 12, it looks like the Texas coaching staff is making moves fast with Mathis.

The problem I see with going out to get Mathis from the transfer portal is simply the fact that he had a big dip in his production last season. It was as recently as 2020 when Mathis came up with more than a dozen tackles for loss and eight sacks. But Texas would be trying to essentially recapture that magic in 2022. Maybe the addition of Gary Patterson to the coaching staff could help with that task.
