Gary Patterson spotted wearing Horns shirt at Texas hoops game
What could soon be the most recently-announced addition to the Texas football coaching staff this offseason for second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian was spotted rocking the Horns gear at a hoops game on Jan. 18. The former longtime TCU Horned Frogs head coach Gary Patterson was discussed for the last couple of months to be a target of Texas to join this coaching staff in some significant defensive role.
And it appears that the deal is all but done and officially announced by most indications for the Longhorns to get Patterson to the Forty Acres. There was yet another indication that this deal is all but officially announced between Patterson and the Longhorns football program on this night as he was spotted wearing the school’s gear at a basketball game.
A post on social media spotted Patterson with Texas athletic director Chris del Conte wearing a Longhorns shirt. He was spotted at the Jan. 18 meeting between the Texas men’s basketball program and the Kansas State Wildcats at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin.
Potential new Texas football coach Gary Patterson spotted in a Longhorns shirt
Patterson has ties with del Conte dating back to the athletic director’s days with the Horned Frogs. Prior to taking his current role heading up the Texas athletic program, del Conte was the athletic director at TCU from 2009-2017. Patterson was TCU’s head coach during the entire time that del Conte was the athletic director in Fort Worth.
Moreover, it looks like there are already some brewing indications of the impact of Patterson on this staff too. That could include the eventual addition out of the NCAA Transfer Portal of the two-time All-Big 12 former TCU edge rusher/defensive end Ochaun Mathis.
Hopefully, we will soon see an official announcement for Texas with Patterson to join this defensive staff. Patterson would be the third big addition to this staff this offseason, after new wide receivers coach Brennan Marion and running backs coach Tashard Choice.
