The biggest target remaining on the board for the 2022 Texas football recruiting class and second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian just a few weeks ahead of National Signing Day is the elite five-star Bowie interior offensive lineman Devon Campbell. Sark and offensive line coach/offensive coordinator Kyle Flood would put a great cap on this 2022 class if they can land a commitment from Campbell early next month.

At this point, the two teams left in the battle to land a commitment from Campbell are Texas and the Oklahoma Sooners. Texas looked like the leader for the last few months, especially after the Sooners saw so much coaching staff turnover since before the offseason started.

Oklahoma lost head coach Lincoln Riley to the USC Trojans and replaced him with the former Clemson Tigers defensive coordinator Brent Venables. But it did help Oklahoma’s case in the recruitment of Campbell that they retained longtime offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh.

Bedenbaugh and the Sooners might be pushing harder with Campbell right now for their 2022 class than with any other prospect remaining on their board for this cycle. You would have to say that the most important remaining prospect on the board for the Sooners 2022 class is either Campbell or five-star OT Josh Conerly Jr.

Moreover, Texas is going to have to fend off a big run of late from the Sooners to land a commitment from Campbell come Feb. 3. According to a report from Horns247 (paid content) on Jan. 19, Oklahoma had Bedenbaugh in attendance for a high school basketball game for Campbell this week.

Flood is also set to visit Campbell later this week. While Campbell has previously stated that he likely won’t take any more in-person visits on campus or in-home visits ahead of his Feb. 3 decision date, Texas and Oklahoma are definitely showing their commitment to him in terms of visiting him.

It sounds like the main factor keeping Oklahoma around in the recruitment of Campbell at this point is Bedenbaugh. Campbell respects the developmental ability and track record of Bedenbaugh.

Yet, most indicators are still pointing to the Longhorns as the favorite in the race to land a commitment from Campbell when it’s all said and done. There is still a lot of anticipation about his upcoming decision early next month, though, on the Forty Acres.
