Potentially the top target of second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian in the 2023 Texas football recruiting class at the wide receiver position is the touted four-star DeSoto product, Johntay Cook. This is also a prospect that new Texas wide receivers coach/passing game coordinator Brennan Marion needs to put his full effort and attention on right now.

Cook would be a very nice staple commitment to have in the Longhorns 2023 class. And landing a key in-state wideout prospect such as Cook is vital for the Longhorns after missing out on a few top targets in Texas for the 2022 class (i.e. Evan Stewart and Jordan Hudson).

It seems like the Longhorns are off to a good start in the recruitment of Cook, though. Texas looks to sit among a top group of two or three schools that also includes the likes of the Alabama Crimson Tide and Texas A&M Aggies.

And it looks like Texas only furthered their chances of potentially landing a commitment from Cook by hiring the former Pitt Panthers wide receivers coach Marion to replace Andre Coleman in a similar role on this staff.

Texas football makes good move for 4-Star WR Johntay Cook by hiring Brennan Marion

This is good news for the Longhorns, who were looking for an injection of energy and confidence to this coaching staff when they hired the likes of Marion and new running backs coach Tashard Choice on staff earlier this offseason. Knowing that Marion is connecting with Cook early on in his time on the Texas coaching staff could be a good sign of things to come.

Moreover, according to a report from Horns247 (paid content), Cook is liking the hire of Marion to replace Coleman. That is despite the fact that Coleman was a top recruiter going after Cook when Texas first offered him back in October 2020.

Marion is going to have to continue to push with Cook as Texas A&M and Alabama are really trying to insert themselves as the frontrunner in the race to land his commitment at the moment. Texas A&M just hosted Cook for an unofficial visit last weekend.

The lone commit in the Longhorns 2023 class right now is the talented four-star Arlington-Seguin defensive back, Jamel Johnson. Cook would definitely be a fantastic second addition to the Longhorns 2023 class if that was ultimately his decision.
