Writer compares Quinn Ewers’ arm talent to Matthew Stafford
Ahead of the start of spring camp, the hype is already building for second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program surrounding the potential of this offense with the former Ohio State Buckeyes freshman transfer quarterback Quinn Ewers leading the way. Ewers was the biggest addition out of the NCAA Transfer Portal so far this offseason for Texas.
Sark and the Longhorns do have a special talent on their hands in Ewers. But we won’t really know what Texas can get out of Ewers until he takes the field next fall and gets actual game reps. Ewers only got a couple of reps in game action for the Buckeyes and head coach Ryan Day last season.
Texas does have some serious talent coming back on the offensive side of the ball surrounding Ewers. That includes the likes of rising junior star running back Bijan Robinson, breakthrough sophomore wide receiver Xavier Worthy, and now former Wyoming Cowboys stud sophomore wide receiver Isaiah Neyor.
The offense looks to be loaded for Texas in 2022. But there are a lot of pieces that need to fall in place for Texas to really come close to reaching their true potential in the season that lies ahead.
Moreover, the hype that Ewers is bringing to the table for Texas this year is evident in some of the comparisons that are being made for him at this point of his collegiate career. One writer even recently compared Ewers’ arm talent to that of the former Georgia Bulldogs star quarterback and Los Angeles Rams veteran Matthew Stafford.
Rivals national writer compares the arm talent of Texas football QB Quinn Ewers to Matthew Stafford
In a piece from Mike Farrell of Rivals this week, the national writer did some NFL comparisons for some of the bigger quarterback names around the college football landscape. That included one comparison where he likened the arm talent of Ewers to that of Stafford from his college days.
Here’s more on what this piece from Rivals had to say on this comparison.
"Both hail from Texas and had similar builds coming out of high school but it’s the howitzer of a right arm on Ewers that reminds me of Stafford way back when. I have no clue if he’ll be a No. 1 overall pick like Stafford but he has the skill level."
That is a lofty comparison for Farrell of Rivals to liken the talent of Ewers to Stafford. The former Bulldog was the No. 1 overall pick of the Detroit Lions in the 2009 NFL Draft. And Stafford is still one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL today.
All in all, there will be a focus on Ewers’ NFL Draft stock from the first snap he takes for the Longhorns. He is likely going to try to take his talents to the NFL as soon as he possibly can. That means he needs to make a very positive impact for Texas right away if he really wants to elevate his draft stock in the next couple of years.
Texas finished up last season with a record of 5-7 (3-6 Big 12) following their win on Black Friday in the regular season finale over the Kansas State Wildcats. That was the first time that Texas missed the postseason since 2016.
