The biggest addition of them all for the Texas football program and second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian out of the NCAA Transfer Portal so far this offseason came in the form of the former Ohio State Buckeyes freshman quarterback and elite five-star recruit Quinn Ewers. Texas got their first addition out of the transfer portal this offseason, which came roughly two months ago, with Ewers coming back to his home state and making his way to the Forty Acres.

A former Longhorns commit when he was coming out of Southlake Carroll High School in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, Ewers is obviously a big name around this program. And now that he is on the Forty Acres as the potential starting quarterback in 2022, there is more excitement than ever surrounding what Ewers can do.

It sounds like Ewers’ addition to the Texas quarterback room is paying immediate dividends too. According to a report from Orangebloods (part of the Rivals network) on Feb. 3, Ewers is making an “instant impression” on the Texas coaching staff in a very positive sense.

Texas football coaches reportedly see Quinn Ewers making an “instant impression” on them

At one point, there were concerns as to whether the Longhorns would be able to seamlessly integrate Ewers into their quarterback room. But losing the former Texas redshirt junior starting quarterback Casey Thompson to the transfer portal and having sophomore Hudson Card willing to battle during winter workouts means that the transition for Ewers into this QB room was much smoother.

It looks like the key here is Ewers making the right connection with his teammates early on during his time in Austin and impressing the coaching staff from the get-go. Most Texas fans have to expect that the starting quarterback job will be Ewers’ for the taking. If he impresses the coaches right away, that makes the job for Sark and his staff that much easier in spring ball and fall camp.

This Orangebloods piece mentions how Sark is still keeping the quarterback battle open between Card and Ewers. But if Ewers isn’t able to win the starting job by the time fall camp begins, there is likely an issue in this quarterback room.

The Texas quarterback room this year looks to feature a big three that includes Ewers, Card, and freshman former four-star recruit Maalik Murphy. It’s also worth watching where sophomore Charles Wright and former walk-on Ben Ballard fall on the QB depth chart in 2022.
