Activity on the trail was pretty quiet lately concerning the 2023 Texas football recruiting class. Texas currently holds one commitment in the 2023 class. And that came back in early November with the touted four-star Arlington-Seguin defensive back Jamel Johnson. Texas is now looking for a nice spark on the recruiting trail for their 2023 class post-National Signing Day 2022.

A big-time target to watch throughout the offseason for the Longhorns 2023 class that would be really nice to get a commitment out of is the elite four-star DeSoto wide receiver, Johntay Cook. He is certainly going to be one of the most important targets to watch for the Longhorns 2023 class this spring.

Cook is clearly going to be one of the top skill position targets throughout this recruiting cycle for second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns staff. He might even wind up being the top target in the Longhorns 2023 class at the wide receiver position.

There are other top blue-chip wide receiver targets out there for this recruiting cycle in-state. But few are going to carry the weight that Cook does.

Texas football reportedly trying to get 4-Star WR Johntay Cook scheduled for a visit later in the spring

Texas is one of the top schools to watch in the race to land a commitment of Cook entering the spring along with the likes of the Texas A&M Aggies, LSU Tigers, Oklahoma Sooners, and Alabama Crimson Tide, among a few others. But this could wind up being a patient process, in the end, to get a decision from Cook.

According to a report from Horns247 on Feb. 9 (paid content), Cook is scheduled to take a visit with new head coach Brian Kelly and LSU next month. And he is reportedly looking to get a visit on the books for later in the spring with the Longhorns.

Cook has already visited Texas multiple times. But knowing that he didn’t visit Texas for their Junior Day a couple of weekends ago means that getting him on the books for one later in the spring is a big priority.

It is especially important for Texas to get a visit booked with Cook if he is also set to take a trip to Baton Rouge to visit LSU in the spring.

Wide receiver is going to be one of the biggest positions of need for the Longhorns to address in the 2023 class. The good news is that it looks like new wide receivers coach/passing game coordinator Brennan Marion is off to a solid start on the recruiting trail pursuing Cook.
