During a pretty quiet period on the trail for second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and the 2023 Texas football recruiting class, there are still some notable storylines to watch as spring ball inches closer. While you would expect the 2023 class to have a rather silent period on the recruiting trail during the dead period for contact with recruits, it would be nice to see some signs of life from Sark and his staff.

And it might not be long before Sark and the Longhorns staff get their next commit up in the 2023 or 2024 class. Spring visits could be a busy time once again on the recruiting trail for Sark and the Longhorns. And one key rising target of the Longhorns 2023 class to watch in the weeks and months ahead is the under-the-radar three-star Dickinson cornerback Vernon Glover Jr.

Texas offered Glover Jr. back in July 2021. So the Longhorns were one of the early schools after him on the recruiting trail.

But it won’t come without competition from big in-state schools to eventually land a commitment from the underrated defensive back. The rival Texas A&M Aggies, TCU Horned Frogs, and Houston Cougars, among a few other schools, appear to be placing a high priority on the recruitment of Glover Jr.

According to a report from Inside Texas on Feb. 12 (paid content), the Longhorns are one of multiple programs in contact with Glover Jr. “every day”. He also noted the likes of the Kansas Jayhawks, Houston, Texas A&M, and TCU, as other schools that are also in contact with him on a consistent basis.

It sounds like the two Texas coaches that Glover Jr. is in contact with the most are cornerbacks coach Terry Joseph and Sark himself. Hosting Glover Jr. for multiple visits to Austin since last offseason along with Sark being in on this recruitment goes to show how much this staff values Glover Jr. as a potential piece of this 2023 class.

The 5-foot-11 and 170-pound in-state product looks like he could be a candidate to get put on the books for yet another visit to Austin this spring. But that doesn’t mean that Texas is necessarily the top school in the battle to land a commitment from Glover Jr.

Texas looks to be putting a lot of effort and energy on the recruiting trail to the pursuit of some rising defensive backs. The lone commitment in the Longhorns 2023 class at the moment is from the touted four-star Arlington-Seguin defensive back Jamel Johnson.
