What looks to be one of the top running back targets early on for the Longhorns 2024 class is the touted blue-chip Tyler High product Derrick McFall. Texas seriously showed their investment in the recruitment of McFall last year by becoming the first school on his ever-growing offer sheet.

There are now a double-digit number of schools that have offered McFall in the time since Texas first looked his way. Some of the other notable schools on his offer sheet now include the Arkansas Razorbacks, Houston, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, and the SMU Mustangs.

It looks like this is one of those recruitments that could realistically come down to the Longhorns and Aggies as two of the top schools involved. But we’ll have to wait and see what other schools decide to prioritize the recruitment of McFall in the months to come.

McFall attended Junior Day for both Texas and Texas A&M last month. But Texas definitely looks to sit in a good spot right now in pursuit of a commitment from McFall. The early connection they started forming with McFall on the recruiting trail is a direct testament to the work that Sark and his staff put in since last offseason pursuing top targets at the skill positions.

Texas is going to have to continue to push with McFall. But the early indications look to be positive from his camp as new running backs coach Tashard Choice has hit the ground running with some of the Longhorns’ top targets in their 2023 and 2024 recruiting classes. That will continue to have to be the case if Texas wants to win the race to eventually land the commitment of McFall.
