The start on the trail for the 2023 and 2024 Texas football recruiting classes is nothing short of amazing. Each of the first three commitments in Texas’ 2023 and 2024 recruiting classes could wind up playing in the secondary. But there are still some really important remaining uncommitted defensive back targets left on the board for Texas in the next two recruiting cycles, including the likes of the elite five-star Arlington-Martin cornerback Javien Toviano.

There are very few five-star targets of the Longhorns 2023 class that this coaching staff was as hot and cold with in the last six or eight months as Toviano. Texas was one of the earliest schools to send a scholarship offer Toviano’s way roughly 15 months ago.

It was actually the regime under former Texas head coach Tom Herman that originally offered Toviano. But it didn’t take long for second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and cornerbacks coach Terry Joseph to show Toviano that he was a top priority for their 2023 class.

Texas football trending in the right direction again with 5-Star CB Javien Toviano

Granted, it did take a while for the traction to resume between Toviano and the Longhorns staff after Herman was replaced by Sark and his staff early last offseason. But Texas appears to be headed in the right direction again with Toviano over the course of the last few months.

According to a report from Nick Harris of Horns247 on Feb. 15 (paid content), Texas found itself “back among” the top contending schools for Toviano thanks to a recent push on the recruiting trail. Texas hosted Toviano for their Junior Elite Day event last month.

That was his most recent visit to the Forty Acres. But he’s taken multiple visits to Texas since they offered him back in the fall of 2020.

It appears that some of the other top contending schools to watch in the race to land a commitment from Toviano are the LSU Tigers, Texas A&M Aggies, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Oregon Ducks, and Alabama Crimson Tide.

Texas looks to have some newfound momentum on the recruiting trail right now with Toviano. It sounds like Texas made a very positive impression on Toviano when he was in attendance for the Junior Day visit weekend last month. That type of push has to continue for Texas to remain in this competitive top group of emerging schools for Toviano.

It looks like Toviano is set to narrow down his list of finalist schools around the end of spring. If Texas can continue this recent wave of momentum they’ve found with Toviano on the recruiting trail, they should be in the mix among his top schools at the end of spring ball in a couple of months.
