One of the first two additions out of the transfer portal this offseason for the Longhorns was the former Ohio State Buckeyes redshirt freshman cornerback and Texas native Ryan Watts. The former blue-chip recruit was on Texas’ radar during his recruitment coming out of high school. But like a few other in-state products in the last few recruiting cycles, he chose to take his talents to Ohio State instead.

Watts was a solid get for the Longhorns, though, early in their offseason process. Texas got Watts enrolled early so that he could participate in winter workouts and spring drills too. This is big since Texas really needs to improve in the secondary in 2022.

The early indicators are pointing to Watts making a very positive impression right away among the Longhorns defensive backs in winter workouts. This word is really coming in since the very beginning of winter workouts too.

Watts is coming in with a group of new defensive back additions to the program that looks to really make a difference for this Texas defense as a whole. He’ll be looking to compete with the likes of incoming freshmen such as Jaylon Guilbeau, BJ Allen, and Terrance Brooks depending on where Pete Kwiatkowski and the defensive staff have him play this fall.

The early signs are pointing to Texas getting an immediate contributor in the secondary out of Watts. He definitely has the potential to be a quality starting defensive back in the Big 12 right away. And I would expect him to be projected to play at the safety position this fall.
