Big 12 Football: 3 transfer destinations for Jayden Daniels
Texas Tech
At the moment, it looks like the Texas Tech Red Raiders and new head coach Joey McGuire will be rolling with the 6-foot-5 and 230-pound rising redshirt sophomore quarterback Donovan Smith as their projected starter this fall. But Smith is not a very proven option for McGuire to go with for his starting quarterback in his first year at the helm as the head coach in Lubbock.
There is still the option for McGuire to pursue a quarterback via the transfer portal this offseason.
And in terms of what Texas Tech brings to the table that could make an impression on Daniels is the new coaching staff that is adding some excitement to this program this offseason. The former Baylor associate head coach McGuire has some exciting names on this coaching staff, especially with the former Western Kentucky Hilltoppers offensive coordinator Zach Kittley trying to revitalize this Red Raider offense in 2022.
Some Texas Tech fans might still have a bad taste in their mouths from former head coach Matt Wells and his staff getting help at the quarterback position out of the portal last offseason. Texas Tech essentially whiffed with the quarterback they got out of the portal last offseason in the former Oregon Ducks starter Tyler Shough.
There is some level of risk involved with McGuire and the Red Raiders taking to the portal route to get help at quarterback again in 2022. That’s not to mention the fact that they would be getting another largely inconsistent former PAC-12 starting quarterback if they landed a commitment from Daniels anytime soon.
But it might not hurt for the Red Raiders to have an insurance policy here and really open up the quarterback competition between two talented players such as Daniels and Smith.
