Former Texas QB says Quinn Ewers will have to outwork everyone
Winter workouts continue to move along for second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program early this offseason. Texas does have some new additions worth watching in the lead-up to spring ball. But the one name that will continue to dominate the headlines for any Texas player throughout the offseason is the former Ohio State Buckeyes freshman quarterback and elite five-star recruit Quinn Ewers.
The narrative surrounding how Ewers will adjust to potentially getting the starting quarterback role right away for Sark and the Longhorns is already a discussion that is ranging on for this football program. It was just a fact of life for Ewers after transferring to Texas that the media coverage would be pretty constant once he arrived here.
And that certainly looks to be the case so far this offseason. One interesting aspect, though, to the discussion surrounding Ewers after arriving on campus for winter workouts is how he is trying to acclimate himself with his teammates right away and how he’s handling all of this pressure.
Most accounts point to Ewers acclimating himself pretty well with his new teammates to become a positive presence in this locker room. That is a good sign for Sark and his staff after experiencing some difficulties with the locker room down the stretch last season.
Texas football will have a lot of pressure on Quinn Ewers to live up to expectations quickly
Texas needs one leader at the quarterback position to find some level of stability for this team throughout the entire season. That was certainly not the case last season for Sark and the Longhorns with sophomore quarterback Hudson Card and redshirt junior Casey Thompson essentially forming a revolving door at the position.
Now, Ewers is looking to prove that is the guy that can help Texas move in the right direction on the offensive side of the ball once again. He’s definitely got the talent, but he’s now got to deal with the pressure and expectations that come along with being the Texas starting quarterback.
There was an interesting take on this discussion that a former Texas quarterback mentioned in a piece with Horns247 this week (paid content). This unnamed former Texas quarterback mentioned how Ewers is going to have to be the hardest working player on this entire roster to really help right the ship for the Longhorns starting this fall.
It is true that Ewers has a lot to learn and that it’s not easy to learn Sark’s offensive playbook quickly. This will be a patient process for Ewers to get on the same wavelength with this coaching staff and the supporting cast he’ll have on offense this coming season.
There’s no doubt that he will have to be one of the hardest working players for the Longhorns throughout the offseason and the 2022 season to come. Meanwhile, Texas fans still need to adjust their expectations to account for the fact that Ewers is essentially like starting a true freshman at quarterback. There will be growing pains associated with that.
Ewers did get a couple of snaps in game action last season with Ohio State. But it wasn’t much. He’ll be tasked with trying to pick up this offense pretty fast, though, as he’s likely to get a good number of the first-team reps in spring ball.
