De’Rickey Wright, LB/EDGE

Among the more recent potential transfer portal targets appearing on the radar for the Longhorns defensive staff at edge rusher is the former Vanderbilt Commodores blue-chip recruit and sophomore linebacker/edge rusher De’Rickey Wright. Texas got an offer out to Wright pretty soon after he first entered the portla. He’s definitely a name to watch on the Longhorns’ radar right now.

There won’t be many more offers that Texas has out to entrants to the transfer portal at this point of the offseason that can fly under the radar than Wright. The problem that seems to be brought up in the case of Wright is the fact that he just was never really able to come close to reaching his true potential on a consistent basis playing for the Vanderbilt defense.

Wright certainly has the ability to make an impact right away for Texas. He’ll just need to find the right fit for him positionally with a supporting cast that can truly elevate his game.

Is the right fit for Wright with the Longhorns?

That’s hard to know right now.

But Texas certainly could use someone with the insane physical tools and ranginess that Wright brings to the table. The main question mark here lies with how Jeff Choate and Pete Kwiatkowski would be able to best utilize the strengths in Wright’s game.

Wright showed flashes during his bits and pieces of two seasons playing for Vandy. Last season was his best as he registered two-dozen combined tackles, four tackles for loss, two pass breakups, and one forced fumble.

Wright also came up with 10 quarterback pressures, 10 stops, and six missed tackles during an up and down 2021 campaign with Vandy.
