Lucas Gordon, Texas baseball can sweep Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
Coming out of the gates blazing hot this season, No. 1 ranked Texas baseball and head coach David Pierce will be looking to move their record to 5-0 (0-0 Big 12) on Feb. 23. Texas is set to take on the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders in the second of two games in this midweek series on the road.
In the first game of this midweek series, the Longhorns downed the Islanders in dominant fashion behind a solid effort on the mound from Andre Duplantier II. Texas downed Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Feb. 22 by the convincing final score of 12-0.
This was the third straight game for the Longhorns to put up double-digit runs. And it was the second game this season where Texas shut out the opposition.
As Texas looks to continue their dominant run to begin the regular season slate, they have a chance to sweep the Islanders on the road at Whataburger Field on Feb. 23. Pierce and the Longhorns are giving the start on the mound in this game to the 6-foot-1 sophomore left-hander Lucas Gordon.
No. 1 Texas baseball has Lucas Gordon on the mound as they try and sweep Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Feb. 23
This will be the first start of the season for Gordon after he appeared in 19 games last year, starting in one. He finished up last season with no decisions and a 3.32 earned run average. Gordon has also appeared in one game this season, shutting out the Rice Owls in one inning on the mound in a Feb. 19 win for the Longhorns.
Meanwhile, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will be giving the call on the mound to right-hander Colin Purcell. In his career, Purcell has 10 appearances and one start with the Islanders where he’s registered an ERA north of 13.
Texas should be in a good spot to come out with a win in this game. That would move them to a record of 5-0 at the conclusion of their first two series of the season.
The last time that Texas started out a baseball season 5-0 was back in 2020 when the campaign came to an early end in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
First pitch between Texas and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to cap this two-game midweek series is set for 4:05 p.m. CT at Whataburger Field on Feb. 23. Next up for the Longhorns following this series finale against the Islanders is a weekend series with the Alabama Crimson Tide at home at Disch-Falk Field starting on Feb. 25.
