Texas basketball has ‘no timetable’ set for the return of C Tre Mitchell
The biggest absence facing first-year head coach Chris Beard and the Texas basketball program at the moment involves junior center Tre Mitchell. Texas missed Mitchell for their last two games, dating back to the Feb. 15 overtime win on the road over the Oklahoma Sooners.
The last game that Mitchell played for the Longhorns came back on Feb. 12 in a loss to the Baylor Bears on the road.
According to a report from Jeff Howe of 247Sports on Twitter on the afternoon of Feb. 22, there is “no timetable on a return” for Mitchell at this point. Beard reportedly said that Mitchell was absent due to “personal reasons” and there is no definite point in which he will return for the Longhorns.
Texas basketball reportedly doesn’t have a timetable set yet for the return of Tre Mitchell
With Texas slated to face head coach Jamie Dixon and the TCU Horned Frogs at home at the Frank Erwin Center on Feb. 23, it looks like this will be the third straight game with Mitchell out. There are also four games remaining on the docket for the regular season schedule for Beard and the Longhorns.
It now looks like the soonest that Mitchell could return for the Longhorns is on Feb. 26 on the road against head coach Bob Huggins and the West Virginia Mountaineers. But that’s based on speculation due to the fact that there is no timetable for Mitchell’s return as of yet.
Mitchell will have missed four Big 12 games in total for Texas once this meeting with TCU concludes. He played in every single non-conference game for Texas, and two-dozen in total so far this season.
Through his 24 games played this season, Mitchell has averaged around nine points per game, four rebounds, one assist, one steal, and one block while shooting 48 percent from the field, 33 percent from beyond the arc, and 80 percent from the free-throw line.
Mitchell has yet to really have the impact that he was originally intended to have for the Longhorns this season. He was one of the biggest additions for Beard and the Longhorns out of the NCAA Transfer Portal last offseason as a two-time All-Atlantic-10 Team selection from his time with the UMass Minutemen.
