The regular season finale is now on tap for first-year head coach Chris Beard and No. 21 ranked Texas basketball this weekend. Texas is set to take on head coach Bill Self and the No. 6 ranked Kansas Jayhawks on the road on the afternoon of March 5 to cap the regular season.

This also promises to be one of the toughest tests of the entire season for Beard and the Longhorns. It also offers Texas the opportunity to start building up a ton of momentum heading into the postseason.

Moreover, Texas is coming off a 68-61 loss to head coach Scott Drew and the No. 3 Baylor Bears at home on Feb. 28 in the final game for this program at the Frank Erwin Center. That snapped a two-game winning streak for the Longhorns and gives them a record of 21-9 (10-7 Big 12) heading into the regular season finale.

Meanwhile, Kansas is coming off a hard-fought win over the TCU Horned Frogs and head coach Jamie Dixon at home on March 3, which came by the final score of 72-68. But Kansas has lost two of their last three games heading into this regular season finale this weekend.

Here’s a look into the betting odds, TV/streaming information, and game prediction as Texas travels to Lawrence to face Kansas at Allen Fieldhouse on March 5, with tip-off time set for 3 p.m. CT.

Texas basketball vs. Kansas prediction

If Texas knocks off Kansas this weekend, they would be able to sweep the Jayhawks in the regular season for the second year in a row. Texas really had Kansas’ number in the last couple of seasons. In fact, Texas is riding a three-game winning streak against the Jayhawks dating back more than 12 months.

Yet, Kansas has to be hungry to end this losing streak to the Longhorns. Kansas does not want to make it three times in their program history where they were swept during the regular season by the Longhorns as their Big 12 foe.

If Texas can top Kansas in this game, it would go a long way to proving they deserve at least a four-seed come Selection Sunday in a couple of weeks. A loss for the Longhorns would likely mean they need a deep run in the Big 12 Tournament to get anything but a five or six-seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Beard and the Longhorns will be counting on senior guard Marcus Carr to continue his solid play of late. Carr looked much better for the Longhorns in the last month and a half than he did in the first half of the regular season.

Texas has the ability to down Kansas as they’ve shown in the last two seasons. But this will be a different beast in trying to beat a motivated Jayhawks team at Allen Fieldhouse in a regular season finale.

This is where Texas needs their senior leaders such as Carr, guard Courtney Ramey, and shooting guard/wing Andrew Jones, among others, stepping up in the spotlight. Senior forwards Timmy Allen and Christian Bishop also need to come up big if Texas wants to win this one.

On the surface, it appears that the Longhorns have a very slim shot to win this game. But Texas had the Jayhawks’ number in the last couple of seasons. And this is the final shot during the regular season for Texas to really make a statement to the Selection Committee.

Final score prediction: Kansas-75, Texas-73
