Texas has an important looming position battle throughout the offseason that is set to come at both offensive tackle positions. And one of the more important names to watch that will likely find himself in a position battle along the offensive line this offseason is the senior offensive tackle Christian Jones.

At the outset of spring ball, I would expect Jones to be a projected starter getting first-team reps. Jones is one of the most experienced offensive linemen returning for the Longhorns in 2022. But he is also one of the returning offensive linemen that had some of the most consistent struggles last season. That is where he really needs to prove the value he can bring for Texas in the trenches.

It might not be long before offensive line coach/offensive coordinator Kyle Flood wants to make a move to play someone younger at both offensive tackle spots this year. Jones was one of the lowest-graded blockers in the Big 12 last season. His pass-blocking grade was pretty concerning too throughout Big 12 play.

Jones will need to show starting in spring ball this year that he can effectively maintain a starting role along the offensive line. But it is also important for Jones to take on a new leadership role to help mentor some of the talented incoming freshman offensive linemen. That includes the likes of Kelvin Banks, Devon Campbell, and Malik Agbo, among others.
