Tight end

Starter: Jahleel Billingsley

Backup: Gunnar Helm

Among the more intriguing positions to watch entering spring ball for the Longhorns is at tight end. Texas will essentially have a completely different tight end room than they had just a couple of seasons ago.

Gone is the former three-star recruit and junior tight end Jared Wiley. He left the program by way of the transfer portal earlier this offseason. And Texas also saw the super senior tight end Cade Brewer leave for the NFL this year.

Moreover, Texas is now looking at a tight end room with an interesting combination of additions to the team since the start of last offseason. Texas has younger tight ends such as redshirt freshman Gunnar Helm, Juan Davis, and the talented Ja’Tavion Sanders.

But there is also the former Alabama Crimson Tide junior tight end Jahleel Billingsley, who was just added to this tight end room by way of the transfer portal this offseason. Billingsley should be the projected starter, especially in passing sets for the Longhorns this year.

One of the issues with using Billingsley as the regular starting tight end is the fact that he’s not as good of a blocker as Helm. When Texas is stacking the line of scrimmage to get a better push for the ground game, Helm is likely to be on the field too.

It is also worth watching to see the progress that the former five-star recruit Sanders is able to make in camp this year. Most Longhorns fans are waiting to see Sanders explode onto the scene this fall.
