Ex-Texas CB Josh Thompson says Terrance Brooks’ technique is ‘nice’
Now less than 24 hours from the start of spring camp on the Forty Acres, the Texas football program is ramping up to get the first official team practice reps going of the 2022 offseason. And there is plenty of excitement building for what lies ahead for second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian this year.
The main area that needs to show improvement, though, for Sark and the Longhorns in 2022 lies on the defensive side of the ball. Texas had one of the worst defensive showings in the modern history of the program during the 2021 season.
It will now be up to co-defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Pete Kwiatkowski and his defensive staff to make some pretty big strides on this side of the ball in 2022.
But some pieces are already getting put in place for the Longhorns defense to improve heading into spring ball. One of those key pieces is the former highly touted Ohio State Buckeyes commit and four-star Little Elm cornerback Terrance Brooks.
Texas did well to flip the commitment of Brooks from Ohio State during the Early Signing Period a few months ago. And not only was Texas able to flip the commitment of Brooks from the Buckeyes during the first signing period, but they also got him signed down and enrolled early to participate in spring camp.
Former Texas football starting CB Josh Thompson has high marks for freshman CB Terrance Brooks
There is a lot of hype surrounding what Brooks can bring to the table for the Longhorns this offseason. And that is something that was echoed by the former Texas starting cornerback and 2022 NFL Draft entrant Josh Thompson.
In a podcast he did with Horns247 this week, Thompson spoke on multiple topics, including what he sees in incoming freshmen Texas corners such as Brooks and fellow former four-star recruit Jaylon Guilbeau.
Thompson mentioned in this podcast with Horns247 that he really likes the technique he sees from Brooks thus far. He specifically mentioned that he thinks Brooks’ “technique is nice” in this discussion this week.
These are decently high marks for Brooks to receive considering the fact that Thompson was arguably Texas’ best cover corner for much of last season.
Thompson looked to have a good connection with Brooks throughout much of the time that Texas was recruiting him out of high school. Thompson once hosted Brooks on a visit to Texas. And it looks like they still have a close relationship to this day.
These high marks from Thompson have to give the likes of Brooks and Guilbeau some added confidence heading into spring camp. They are going to be asked to likely take a lot of second-team reps, which could be challenging against a deep and talented Texas receiving corps this early on in their collegiate careers.
Texas is set to begin spring ball on March 22, and the spring football game is set to take place on April 23 at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. And then, the regular season slate is set to open up on Sep. 3 at home against Louisiana-Monroe.
