The impact that the play of the quarterback will have on the offensive line this fall for the Longhorns is an interesting aspect of dissecting this position battle in spring ball. While you’d figure that Texas would have the edge in terms of the impact on the offensive line by starting the signal-caller is able to get the ball out faster, there are other aspects to this that must be considered.

Card was not able to get the ball out of his hands very fast last fall. In fact, he ranked in the bottom three in the Big 12 last season in terms of average time to throw, north of 3.5 seconds.

The good news in that regard is the fact that he was able to get the ball out faster as the season moved along. You would expect that to happen too as Card settled in with the offense last season.

One area that the quarterback battle will impact the offensive line surrounds how the starter is able to command the play-calling at the line of scrimmage. Texas will need to make better adjustments this fall to be able to deal with pressure. And that is one area where Card is likely to give Texas an edge as the starter over Ewers.

Considering the fact that Texas is likely to have a young offensive line this fall means that Card might be able to more effectively direct things early on. That is something that should benefit rising sophomore center Jake Majors more so than anyone else.

Majors did improve as last season moved along. But he will still have an adjustment period this fall that could be helped by a more experienced quarterback leading the way early in the season.

It is also worth mentioning that Majors had a better pass-blocking grade last fall while Card was taking snaps over former Texas starting quarterback Casey Thompson. There seems to be a level of comfort and chemistry between Card and Majors.
