Despite the Longhorns adding a commitment out of the transfer portal already this offseason from a defensive back in the former Ohio State Buckeyes redshirt freshman cornerback Ryan Watts, more secondary depth could still be brought into the mix in the near future. And this is where one of the best and most proven defensive backs that recently entered the portal this month could help the Longhorns in the former Iowa State Cyclones All-Big 12 cornerback Datrone Young.

This four-year starter for the Cyclones and super-senior cornerback would be a valuable addition to the Texas secondary, which is lacking experience at this position outside of fellow senior D’Shawn Jamison.

The idea of adding an experienced and proven Big 12 defensive back by way of the transfer portal is a concept that shouldn’t be ignored by the Longhorns coaching staff. While Young might not be the primary starting corner right away for Texas if he landed on the Forty Acres this offseason, he would likely be no lower than third in the pecking order.

Young would also be able to bring a unique skill set and proven track record of experience to the table for Texas. He’s remained one of the more consistent cover corners in the Big 12 over the last two or three seasons.

The versatility that Young brings to the table could also be useful for the Texas secondary. He was one of the five highest-graded corners in the Big 12 in run defense last season. And he did all that while registering one interception, two pass breakups, and a missed tackle rate lower than 12 percent.

If Texas is still seeking out help in the secondary by way of the portal in the spring, Young should be one of the potential targets high up on their list.
