Although the thought likely didn’t even cross the mind of most Texas football fans this offseason, there are still some around the college football landscape that felt it could be realistic to expect the standout rising sophomore wide receiver Xavier Worthy to test the waters in the NCAA Transfer Portal. Yet, that was mostly unfounded speculation by fans and message boards outside of the Texas sphere.

Second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns likely weren’t expecting Worthy at any point this offseason to enter the transfer portal. But Worthy himself confirmed that any potential speculation concerning transfer portal rumors is anything but true.

Worthy reportedly stated over the weekend that he doesn’t intend to enter the transfer portal anytime soon and that he is essentially buying into the vision that Sark and this staff have for the program over the long haul. It’s good to hear the buy-in for Worthy into what Sark has planned for the Longhorns program.

That should be the main takeaway here from what Worthy is saying. The fact that he’s still fully bought into what Sark and the Longhorns staff envision for this program over the long haul shows some level of progress in this locker room.

One of the biggest issues Texas had last year was getting the buy-in from some of the bigger names on this team. That left Sark and his staff to try and filter out some of the more toxic presences in the locker room this offseason.

And the fact that the Longhorns are getting key players such as Worthy speaking on their belief in Sark and the Longhorns as a whole as early as spring ball should bode well for this fall. Texas needs this type of buy-in for the program to succeed on the field.

Texas finished up last season with a record of 5-7 (3-6 Big 12), missing out on bowl season for the first time since 2016. Worthy and the Longhorns are set to open up the 2022 season on Sep. 3 at home against Louisiana-Monroe.
