The only current Texas commitment visiting the Forty Acres this weekend is the touted four-star Arlington-Seguin defensive back/cornerback Jamel Johnson. But there are two really important reasons why this visit for Johnson to Texas is so critical.

The first reason why this visit is important for Johnson and the Longhorns is the fact that the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex product was rumored to be thinking about exploring other options this offseason. While it still looks like Johnson is planning to use some, if not all, of his official visits to see some other schools this offseason, he did recently reaffirm his commitment to Texas.

Texas can do more to further secure the commitment of Johnson during his weekend visit.

And the second reason why this visit for Johnson to Austin this weekend is crucial is the fact that he could be looking to recruit other prospects to the Forty Acres. Johnson is the first commitment in this trio of 2023 recruits currently in the class for the Longhorns. His word carries a lot of weight with other top targets of the Longhorns 2023 class this offseason.

Special teams coordinator/tight ends coach Jeff Banks and cornerbacks coach Terry Joseph did a great job on the recruiting trail securing an early commitment from Johnson. But they need to continue to maintain and even build on this relationship with him as he’s about to go through the process of starting his five official visits to other schools this summer.
