Most accounts from this weekend’s spring scrimmage for the Longhorns point to the secondary showing a lot of flashes that will provide some optimism about this level of the defense heading into the spring game in a couple of weeks. And one of the reasons for that optimism is the rise of the former four-star recruit and rising sophomore cornerback Jamier Johnson.

As one of the more forgotten names in this secondary, Johnson is rising to the occasion at the right time for the Longhorns in spring ball. He’ll really have a big opportunity to make his way firmly into the two-deep depth chart this spring with the likes of junior Jahdae Barron moving to nickel and sophomore Kitan Crawford moving to the safety position.

One of the videos posted from the spring scrimmage this weekend on the official Texas Football Twitter page showed Johnson heading up a goalline stop for the defense on rising sophomore running back Jonathon Brooks.

A report from Horns247 (paid content) coming out of this weekend’s scrimmage indicated that Johnson was “the biggest surprise of the day”. He had two reported pass breakups and that key goalline stop that highlighted his big day in this scrimmage.

There are some indicators building up that Johnson could get some significant reps in the spring game on April 23. And if he continues to make the right impression on the coaching staff as he has of late throughout the rest of the offseason, watch out for Johnson to head into the 2022 season as one of the top three or four corners on the depth chart.
