One of the most notable departures from the Texas football program so far this offseason via the NCAA Transfer Portal for second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian is the former starting redshirt junior quarterback Casey Thompson. After it became known that Texas was getting a commitment out of the transfer portal early this offseason from the former elite five-star recruit and Ohio State Buckeyes freshman quarterback Quinn Ewers, Thompson entered the portal himself.

Thompson would find his next landing spot with head coach Scott Frost and the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Big Ten after putting his name in the portal a few months ago. He now looks to be the favorite to win the starting job in Lincoln for Frost and the Huskers this year.

Something that happened earlier this offseason that really made Thompson look like the favorite to win the starting job for Nebraska for the 2022 season was their former starter Adrian Martinez entering the portal to leave for the Kansas State Wildcats in the Big 12. Martinez will be linking up with head coach Chris Klieman and the Wildcats to presumptively become their next starting quarterback.

Moreover, Thompson seemingly had a good showing for the most part for the Huskers in spring ball. But that didn’t stop Frost from being at least a little bit critical of Thompson, along with the rest of the Nebraska offense, coming out of their spring football game this weekend.

Nebraska held its spring football game on April 9 with the Red-White Game. The spring game was high scoring for the Huskers, but there were some faults from both offenses in this one.

Frost mentioned that there were times when Thompson looked good in the spring game. But he also noted that there are essentially quite a few strides Thompson still needs to make before he’s going to be the set-in-stone starting quarterback.

It sounded like in the post-spring game press conference this weekend that Frost was placing more fault on the entire offense, and not just on Thompson’s shoulders. He noted that “there’s a lot of learning” to do for the Huskers offense, and that they have “a lot more ground to make up this summer”.

On the other hand, though, Frost noted that he’s seen “good progress” from Thompson and the Nebraska offense and that there are times when the offense “looks like a million bucks”.

All in all, it’s sounding like Thompson is making some of the necessary strides to become the next starting quarterback for the Huskers. He’s coming in as a potential immediate impact quarterback out of the portal for the Huskers after some of the flashes he showed with the Longhorns last fall.

dark. Next. Spring transfers that can elevate Quinn Ewers

Thompson and the Longhorns finished up last season with a record of 5-7 (3-6 Big 12) following a win in the regular season finale on Black Friday over Kansas State.

Nebraska just finished up their spring football game on April 9. Meanwhile, Texas is set to take part in its spring football game at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on April 23.
