Honorable mentions

There are a few names worth watching on the open market for the Longhorns faithful early this offseason. If last offseason was any indication, there should be some big transfer additions looming in the next few weeks/months for Beard and the Longhorns.

Tyrese Hunter, G

After having a stellar freshman campaign with the resurgent Iowa State Cyclones, the reigning Big 12 Newcomer of the Year Tyrese Hunter surprisingly put his name in the transfer portal earlier this week. Hunter is definitely the big splash transfer target that could’ve potentially appeared for Beard and his staff early this offseason.

Texas clearly has some guard depth to replace this offseason, and it’s hard to find a more effective way to do so than by landing the versatile playmaker and uber-talented Hunter.

It’s still in the early stages of Hunter’s decision-making process, but Texas could be a school to watch in his recruitment out of the portal.

Johni Broome, C

I’ve mentioned the former Morehead State defensive stud big man and rising junior Johni Broome a couple of times as a potential transfer target to watch for the Longhorns early this offseason. There’s no doubt in my mind that the two-time All-OVC and reigning OVC Defensive Player of the Year would help to fix a lot of the woes Texas faced in terms of interior defense, rebounding, and rim protection.

Terrence Shannon Jr., SG/SF

I don’t know how willing the former Texas Tech Red Raiders standout junior wing Terrence Shannon Jr. would be in reuniting with his old head coach and playing for a longtime Big 12 foe in Texas. But there are indications that Shannon could consider making such a move this offseason.

The fact of the matter is that Shannon was much more productive in the final season he played under Beard when he was Texas Tech’s head coach. Shannon was still an effective scoring wing last season in the first year under new Texas Tech head coach Mark Adams, but that clearly didn’t get him to stick around for another season.

Shannon could be a name to watch moving forward for the Longhorns.
