4 players that will suffer from Texas negating spring game
Morice Blackwell, S
One of the notable position changes that occurred this spring for the Longhorns saw redshirt freshman Morice Blackwell move from linebacker to safety. Texas moved a few players to safety this offseason from other position groups, and Blackwell looks to be one of those finding success since the switch this spring.
But Blackwell is still facing an uphill battle in terms of actually getting significant reps at any safety slot this offseason. He did work in with the second team often playing at boundary safety with some of the movement in the secondary otherwise. Yet, it would be nice to see Blackwell get his chance in the spotlight playing with the second-team secondary in the spring game.
With some of the momentum he’s got coming out of a solid set of spring practices, this looked like the perfect time for Blackwell to get some key reps in the spring game.
Blackwell did not get a chance yet to prove what he can do playing in the boundary safety spot instead of at linebacker in anything but a scrimmage. We will have to continue to wait until this fall to see Blackwell in further action once the season arrives.
Yet, it will still be important to see how Blackwell performs this weekend in some of the more challenging situational defensive looks. Sark mentioned that the red zone scrimmage will take place to round out the festivities on April 23. Seeing if Blackwell can hold his own in that situation will be interesting this weekend.
If he can continue to impress this year, it looks like Blackwell could be a dark horse candidate to win a starting role at boundary safety next season.
