A constant storyline for head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program throughout spring ball revolves around the strong play of the defensive backs in drills and the last couple of scrimmages. Texas looks to be getting some excellent defensive back play so far during the spring, which is a very encouraging sign of what could be ahead this fall.

And one Longhorns defensive back that is sticking out in spring camp thus far is the returning super senior cornerback D’Shawn Jamison. Since Jamison essentially was exclusively getting first-team reps at corner after the suspension and freshman and early enrollee Jaylon Guilbeau, his play reached new heights.

Jamison is seemingly getting better and better as spring camp moves along. And that could reach a peak during the non-standard format spring game this weekend.

Moreover, Jamison looks to be leading the way for the Texas secondary in terms of making big-time plays in drills and scrimmages this spring. We continue to hear that Jamison is picking off the quarterbacks almost every single practice.

Jamison had one of the more impressive plays that emerged from last weekend’s scrimmage when he picked off the former Ohio State Buckeyes freshman transfer quarterback Quinn Ewers. He took that back to the house for a pick-six, which was a highlight that was posted by the Texas Football Twitter page earlier in the week.

A report from Inside Texas this week (paid content) also indicates that Jamison had at least one pick of the quarterbacks again in practice again on April 21. Jamison keeps coming to the forefront this spring in terms of how often he’s picking off the quarterbacks in practice.

What we keep hearing this spring at an ever-increasing pace is the fact that Jamison is making more and more plays as camp moves along.

I’ll say it again, that is a great early indicator of what lies ahead for Jamison in probably his final year playing for the Longhorns.

Texas needs a big season out of Jamison this fall. He was one of the most consistent performers and big-time playmakers on defense and special teams in 2019 and 2020, where he came up with three picks, 10 pass breakups, and two kicks returned for touchdowns.

But his production took a dip last season with no picks, no kicks/punts returned or touchdowns, and just one pass breakup. Jamison’s solid run in spring camp could be a sign that he is ready for a much-needed bounce-back season in 2022.

Texas officially began spring practice back on March 22. Jamison and the Longhorns are set to take part in the altered spring football game at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on April 23, with start time set for 6 p.m. CT.
