Justice Finkley, EDGE

Among the more prominent new additions for the Longhorns this year is the former touted four-star recruit and freshman early enrollee Justice Finkley. The Alabama native and incoming freshman is one of the most impressive new additions to the program so far during spring camp.

And there’s a good shot that co-defensive coordinators/linebackers coaches Pete Kwiatkowski and Jeff Choate will want to give some first-team looks to Finkley in this altered spring game on April 23.

Finkley is battling it out with the likes of returning super senior Ovie Oghoufo, freshman DJ Harris Jr., sophomore Barryn Sorrell, and senior Jett Bush, among others, for reps this spring either at the buck or jack position along the defensive front. He’s definitely made a compelling argument to get in the rotation among the edge rushers this fall with his strong showing in spring ball.

But Finkley must round out his solid showing in spring camp thus far on a high note with some big plays during the altered spring game on this night.

If Finkley can show that he’s made some necessary strides by making the right reads and getting some pressure on the quarterback and/or ball carrier in the spring game, then he’s likely to continue to get on the good side of this coaching staff. It will also be important for Finkley to make the right impression on the coaching staff considering the fact that Texas is hosting the former TCU Horned Frogs two-time All-Big 12 senior edge rusher/defensive end Ochaun Mathis on campus this weekend.

Finkley will want to prove his value to stay in the thick of this two-deep depth chart at the conclusion of spring ball especially if Texas lands a commitment from Mathis out of the transfer portal within the next week or so.
