3 Texas players that could enter the portal after Myron Warren
Charles Wright, QB
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, if the former under-the-radar Austin High three-star recruit and rising redshirt freshman quarterback Charles Wright wants to get himself some playing time at any point in the near future, he’ll likely have to enter the transfer portal to do so. Wright just is facing a real uphill battle when it comes to the current makeup of the Texas quarterback room.
After Sark and the Longhorns landed a commitment out of the portal from the former Ohio State Buckeyes freshman transfer quarterback and elite five-star recruit Quinn Ewers, Wright was essentially removed from the relevant picture of battling it out for a spot on the two-deep depth chart. Wright did serve as a quarterback that could help ease the transition for Ewers, but that didn’t need to last very long.
What will make it even more difficult for Wright to find his footing in any relevant role in this quarterback room is the level at which Sark and quarterbacks coach AJ Milwee are performing on the recruiting trail right now. Texas signed a very talented quarterback in the former Junipero Serra High School standout and four-star recruit Maalik Murphy in the 2022 class.
And the Longhorns are very much in the running to land a commitment from the elite five-star Isidore Newman quarterback Arch Manning to head up their 2023 class.
That leaves Wright in a spot where he will likely be looking up at least at three or four other quarterbacks on the depth chart over the next couple of years in Austin.
If Wright wants to stay close to home and help continue to form some type of stability in this quarterback room, that would be one of the major reasons for him to stick around. Only time will tell how much he’s chomping at the bit to get some live game reps.
