There weren’t many skill position players for the Longhorns that experienced the peaks and valleys of spring ball, without even dealing with any injury issues, quite like the second-year wide receiver and former three-star recruit Casey Cain. At one point of spring practice, it really looked like Cain was challenging for a spot potentially on the two-deep depth chart.

But those hopes were shot down pretty fast as Texas landed a key commitment out of the transfer portal from the former Alabama Crimson Tide freshman wide receiver Agiye Hall last week. Nabbing a pledge from Hall out of the portal could likely end the run for Cain to legitimately challenge for a spot on the two-deep at any wide receiver spot this fall.

A major factor that could contribute to a potential transfer decision for Cain, outside of just a challenge to earn live game reps, is the fact that he is not a Sark-era recruit. Cain was recruited by Herman’s staff, namely former wide receivers coach Andre Coleman and ex-offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich. Not even Coleman is left on this coaching staff after being replaced earlier this offseason by the new wide receivers coach/passing game coordinator Brennan Marion.

And over the course of the last two spring games, Cain didn’t look to have much chemistry going between him and either Ewers or the now rising junior quarterback Hudson Card. There were two passes that Ewers tossed Cain’s way in the altered spring game last weekend, neither of which resulted in completions. You can’t blame Cain for those, especially the overthrow that is the fault of Ewers, but it goes to show that this just might not be the right fit for him.
