One of the bigger names from the Texas football program to show up in the NCAA Transfer Portal this offseason is the former blue-chip recruit and junior safety Chris Adimora. Texas lost Adimora to the transfer portal as part of the initial roster turnover that happened early this offseason. And while it took a while for Adimora to find his next home out of the portal, his transfer process was completed this weekend.

Adimora announced on the evening of May 6 on his Twitter timeline that he will be committing to new head coach Rhett Lashlee and the SMU Mustangs out of the transfer portal. He’s set to join a couple of other former Longhorns players that landed with SMU out of the transfer portal so far this offseason.

The other former Longhorns players that committed to SMU out of the portal this offseason are freshman defensive end/edge rusher David Abiara and redshirt junior wide receiver Joshua Moore. Two of these former Longhorns were Tom Herman-era recruits, while Abiara was a late addition to the Longhorns 2021 recruiting class via Bo Davis and Pete Kwiatkowski.

Adimora and Moore will both give the Mustangs some impactful upperclassmen who both had their fair share of flashes of brilliance in the last few years playing for Texas. Moore definitely had a more tumultuous end to his run with the Longhorns than Adimora, though.

What Adimora brings to the table out of the transfer portal for the Mustangs is a defensive back with three years of experience and more than 800 defensive snaps under his belt for his career to date. Adimora registered just over 60 career combined tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack, one interception, seven pass breakups, and seven quarterback pressures during his time at Texas.

Adimora never really got consistent starting reps at the safety position for Texas under Steve Sarkisian’s staff. His number of defensive snaps dropped from more than 525 during the shortened 2020 season to just over 100 last fall.

Texas finished up last season with a record of 5-7 (3-6 Big 12), missing out on bowl season for the first time since 2016. Sark and the Longhorns are set to open up the 2022 regular season at home on Sep. 3 against Louisiana-Monroe.
