It is a tad bit surprising that this particular returning Longhorns wide receiver is reportedly helping Texas to recruit Addison out of the portal. But this could just go to show how committed this Longhorns team really is to move the program in the right direction.

Rising redshirt junior wide receiver Jordan Whittington looks like a lock at the moment to get one of the starting spots come this fall.

The issue for Whittington in his collegiate career thus far has nothing to do with his performance on the field. His injury issues were rampant in each of the last three seasons.

The good news for Whittington, though, is the fact that he’s been able to play in more and more games with each passing season. He missed essentially the entirety of his true freshman campaign in 2019 due to injury issues. And then, he missed a little more than half of the shortened 2020 season due to injuries.

But Whittington did manage to play in a career-high seven games last season. And that came without Texas reaching a bowl game.

Moreover, Whittington could be viewing the potential addition of Addison to this receiving corps out of the portal this offseason as a positive for two major reasons. The first is the fact that Addison would obviously help Texas move the needle in terms of success in the win column this fall.

If Texas is actually contending in the Big 12 this coming season, it helps everyone. And if Whittington can retain his starting spot this coming season, despite the potential addition of Addison, that would clearly be a win-win situation for him.

Secondly, still assuming that Whittington can retain his starting spot in a situation where Texas does add Addison this offseason, that could really open up the field for him in the receiving game.
