3 Texas football players that suffer from Jordan Addison
Casey Cain, WR
There’s no doubt in my mind that the remaining wide receivers on the roster for the Longhorns at this point of the offseason that were already fighting to make their way onto the two-deep will be further challenged if Texas adds another stud such as Addison to this group ahead of next season. That is definitely the case for the former three-star recruit and redshirt freshman wide receiver Casey Cain.
Cain made some necessary strides to start making his name known to Sark, Marion, and the Longhorns during spring camp in the last couple of months. But the improvements he did make apparently didn’t make enough of a statement for Cain to seemingly make his way onto the two-deep ahead of fall camp.
And that came before the Longhorns added a key wideout via the transfer portal such as the former Alabama Crimson Tide touted freshman and blue-chip recruit Agiye Hall a few weeks ago.
To illustrate just how difficult it could be for Cain to make it onto the two-deep this fall if Texas does get a commitment out of the portal from Addison, let’s think about the projected depth chart at the position in 2022. If Texas did land Addison, he would likely challenge both rising redshirt junior Jordan Whittington and the former Wyoming Cowboys breakout redshirt freshman Isaiah Neyor for reps this fall. It’s hard to imagine sophomore star Xavier Worthy losing many reps, even with Addison in the mix.
Moreover, if Whittington and/or Neyor are losing reps, that means Cain gets pushed even further down the depth chart whether he’s slotted at the z or the x (both possibilities for Cain to play at this fall).
Cain already figures to fall in behind the likes of freshmen Brenen Thompson and Jaden Alexis ahead of next season. That becomes even more difficult with Addison in the mix.
Cain is really going to face an uphill battle now to earn reps at any point this coming season in a hypothetical world where Addison joins this receiving corps this offseason.
