Texas football QB Maalik Murphy shows off crisp accuracy
With most of the attention this offseason in terms of the quarterback room for second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program falling on the former Ohio State Buckeyes freshman transfer Quinn Ewers, there are some other storylines flying under the radar. And one of those looming storylines for the Texas quarterback room that is important to watch this offseason is the recovery and development of freshman Maalik Murphy.
The former four-star Junipero Serra quarterback recruit and 2022 early enrollee Murphy worked his way back from a foot injury he suffered back in high school throughout spring camp with the Longhorns in the last couple of months. We didn’t really get to see what Murphy could do at all in actual full-contact drills and/or scrimmage situations in spring camp this year due to the rehab.
Sark, quarterbacks coach AJ Milwee, and the Longhorns do seemingly have some visible progress to hang their hat on, though, in the last few months as Murphy continues to go through rehab and workouts.
Texas football QB Maalik Murphy shows progress in throwing drills
He even showed off his arm in throwing drills in a video that was posted on Twitter from private quarterback coach Danny Hernandez over the weekend.

Murphy looked good in these throwing drills from this video posted by Hernandez on Twitter on May 14. This particular video showed Murphy hitting what looked to be about a 15-20 yard post route, and he was pretty much on the money.
By all accounts, it looks and sounds like Murphy is moving along nicely through his rehab in the last few months. He was able to get out of the cast and at least do some throwing drills during spring ball last month, albeit not with the full-contact drills with his teammates.
Sark and the Longhorns staff sound excited about what’s to come for Murphy once he’s able to get back to full speed. And with the pace he’s on right now, it might not be too long before Murphy really starts to hit his stride again.
Texas officially finished up spring camp with the altered version of the annual Orange-White spring football game back on April 23. Sark and the Longhorns are set to open up the 2022 regular season at home on Sep. 3 against Louisiana-Monroe.
