This point of the recruitment of the elite five-star Katy-Paetow (TX) defensive lineman David Hicks is likely going to wind up being one of the most critical of any as it relates to the chances for Texas football to make a big impression on him and his camp. Texas hasn’t really set the pace in the race to land a commitment from Hicks at any point of his recruitment in the last year or so.

In the last few months, though, defensive line coach Bo Davis and the Longhorns have really picked up the pace in their efforts to make some big moves with Hicks this offseason. And those efforts seem to be helping Davis and the Longhorns get more traction with Hicks heading into the summer.

Since it looks like Hicks is going to wait to put pen to paper to sign his letter of intent until the signing day in early 2023, Texas has seemingly gained more traction with him at the right time. Texas still has plenty of time to make the right impression on Hicks.

Moreover, there will be some level of urgency for the Longhorns staff in the recruitment of Hicks this week. With Texas set to host Hicks on an unofficial visit in Austin on June 2, the time is now to really make a big impression with him and his camp ahead of the 2022 season.

Now is the time for Texas football to make big moves with 5-Star DL David Hicks

This could be the only visit that the Longhorns get with Hicks in Austin before the fall arrives. That makes this unofficial the time to strike with the elite in-state defensive lineman.

What adds even more urgency to this visit is the timing of the trip. Hicks is currently on an unofficial with the Texas A&M Aggies on June 1. And he just took a visit with the Oklahoma Sooners, another presumed top school in the mix for him, on May 28.

Texas A&M and Oklahoma look to be the two top schools in the running for Hicks right now if you had to name a top group.

Thus, Hicks’ unofficial visit on June 2 gives Texas the final word among the schools that he saw during this trip in the last few days before he starts his officials later this month. That gives Texas a potential edge here to make a lasting impression before Hicks gets through the three officials he has on the books for out-of-state schools in the next few weeks.

Hicks is set to officially visit the Michigan State Spartans (June 3), Miami Hurricanes (June 10), and Oregon Ducks (June 17) at least from what he has on the books at the moment.

Texas leaving a lasting impression with Hicks could also help get them an official visit later this year when the five-star DL plans the rest of his OV schedule. It is likely that Texas, Texas A&M, and Oklahoma will be the three schools duking it out to get the two remaining official visits from Hicks either this fall or in the winter.

All in all, it’s easy to see how this visit with Hicks is stacking up to be pivotal for Davis and the Longhorns staff. This will be Hicks’ second visit to Austin since the start of spring ball a few months ago. And Texas can continue to build momentum with one of their highest-rated targets for the 2023 recruiting class if they make some big moves during this unofficial on June 2.

Above all else, the Longhorns will need a strong showing this fall with more success in the win column compared to last season to ultimately make the impression they need to with Hicks and his camp. A successful visit this week could plant the seed necessary to get Hicks interested to return for an official later on down the line.
