Late in the morning of June 11, Texas baseball and head coach David Pierce will be attempting to stay alive against the No. 8 East Carolina Pirates in the first-ever Greenville Super Regional. No. 9 Texas fell short against ECU in the first game of the Greenville Super Regional on June 10.

A number of missed chances for the Longhorns and some untimely pitching mistakes cost this team in the end in the first game against ECU in this super regional. Texas left more runners on base in Game 1 of this super regional than the Pirates while scoring five fewer runs.

Pete Hansen also got shelled in his four innings of work on the mound, where he allowed five earned runs, seven hits, six runs total, and one walk. He also struck out three batters on the day.

But the Texas bullpen wasn’t able to do much in relief of Hansen on the mound. Tristan Stevens highlighted the struggles of the bullpen in this game, as he gave up four earned runs late in this one in just 0.1 innings of work on the mound.

Texas will attempt to get picked up by Lucas Gordon, who gets the start on this day and is playing very well of late. Gordon still has yet to give up more than three earned runs in a loss so far this season. And in his last four starts, he’s given up just three earned runs combined in more than 25 innings pitched.

Gordon also claimed the win in each of his last four starts.

ECU will put Gordon’s winning streak to the test on June 11, though. This is a red-hot ECU offense that will be looking to send the Longhorns back to Austin without even needing the third game in this Greenville Super Regional.

The fact of the matter in this second game of this super regional is that the Longhorns are going to need better pitching. The run support wasn’t there in droves on June 10, but seven is still a good number to put on the board.

The first pitch time between Texas and ECU on June 11 is set for 11 a.m. CT and will be televised on ESPN2. If Texas takes the win on June 11, there will be a final elimination game for both teams to cap this super regional on June 12.
