The news cycle is literally non-stop for Texas football recruiting in the last few days. Since Texas landed a commitment from the elite five-star Isidore Newman quarterback Arch Manning back on June 23, the floodgates have opened in a major way for second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff in the 2023 recruiting class.

And the Longhorns continue to find more and more potential momentum on the recruiting trail early this week with some news that came about on the night of June 27. Just after the Longhorns pulled an extraordinary commitment in the Alabama Crimson Tide five-star Westgate (LA) safety recruit, Derek Williams, on June 27, Texas got some news regarding three-star South Oak Cliff edge rusher Billy Walton.

In a post on his Twitter timeline on the night of June 27, the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex product Walton announced he would be de-committing from the Oklahoma State Cowboys. This announcement from Walton comes about two months after he originally committed to Oklahoma State in late April.

Could Texas football land 3-Star EDGE Billy Walton after his de-commitment from Oklahoma State?

This news also isn’t much of a big surprise considering the momentum that Texas was starting to have with Walton once again following the conclusion of his official visit to Austin last weekend. Walton had a successful official visit to Texas last weekend by all accounts, likely leading to this de-commitment to start the week.

Walton also posted on Twitter earlier in the day on June 27 video of him in Texas gear during his official visit to Austin over the weekend with the “Hook’em” hand sign and emoji in the tweet.

Texas is clearly in a favorable spot with Walton right now as a commitment wouldn’t really surprise anyone if he joins the Longhorns 2023 class in the near future.

Moreover, it’s clear that the Longhorns defensive staff is making Walton a priority on the recruiting trail this summer. Texas is looking to add depth in the 2023 class among true pass rushers, and Walton is experienced in a number of ways in this regard. He can play as a hybrid edge rusher or a true weak-side defensive end.

Following the commitment of the elite Louisiana safety Williams on June 27, Texas is now up to 15 recruits in the 2023 class. More numbers in the 2023 class could be on the way soon as the Longhorns continue to remain scorching hot on the recruiting trail this summer.
