Texas football trending for 4-Star Jordan Matthews ahead of decision date
The next decision date that was set among key targets of the 2023 Texas football recruiting class came about thanks to an announcement on social media on Aug. 4. Late in the morning of Aug. 4, the highly touted four-star Woodlawn (LA) cornerback Jordan Matthews took to Twitter to announce his top three finalist schools and his decision date of Aug. 15.
Texas made it through with his three finalist schools, which also include the Tennessee Volunteers out of the SEC East and Michigan Wolverines out of the Big Ten East.
Matthews announced his decision date and top three finalist schools roughly one week after he took an unofficial visit to Austin for the July Texas BBQ and pool party.
He also visited Texas unofficially in April and January 2022. In total, Matthews has unofficially visited Texas three times in 2022.

With this set decision date for Matthews, it looks like the Longhorns will get the final word among in-person visits among the schools in the top group in the race to land his commitment this summer.
It also helps Texas’ cause that literally every single forecast in 2022 from the trio of recruiting services that includes 247Sports, Rivals, and On3, projects Matthews’ commitment to Texas. And a good portion of those forecasts projecting Matthews’ commitment to Texas came in the last few weeks.
However, we can’t count out the competition for Texas on the recruiting trail from Tennessee and Michigan in the race to land a commitment from Matthews. He looked to have some real traction with Michigan and Tennessee during his summer official visits.
Matthews officially visited Michigan on June 3 and Tennessee on June 24.
But it’s hard to see either Michigan or Tennessee making up enough ground in the next couple of weeks to push Texas for Matthews’ commitment on Aug. 25. Texas and cornerbacks coach Terry Joseph looked to hold a pretty commanding lead in the race to land a commitment from Matthews throughout the summer.
Joseph and the Longhorns did a really nice job building a very strong connection with Matthews and his camp throughout the offseason. And that came to a head during the successful unofficial visit where Texas hosted Matthews for the July BBQ last week.
Texas currently holds commitments from 20 recruits in the 2023 class, highlighted by the elite five-star Isidore Newman quarterback Arch Manning. At the moment, Texas holds commitments from three defensive backs in the 2023 class which includes five-star South Oak Cliff cornerback Malik Muhammad, five-star Westgate (LA) safety Derek Williams, and four-star Arlington-Seguin safety Jamel Johnson.
