Analyzing Texas football’s QB room post-Card, Ewers injuries
Charles Wright
The former Iowa State Cyclones commit and three-star Austin High product Wright looks like the next option up in the quarterback room after Ewers and Card suffered injuries last weekend. Sark noted that Wright was the “next man up” at quarterback, and he was seen warming up when Card came up hobbling in the second half against the Tide.
It looks like there is a good possibility that Wright could be the quarterback taking the first-team reps at quarterback this week in practice ahead of the matchup against UTSA on Sep. 17. Wright was the third-team quarterback on the depth chart for the first two weeks of the season. I would imagine that he is the best option moving forward if Card can’t go this coming weekend.
We’ve talked about Wright before in a deep dive on Hookem Headlines in terms of what he brings to the table for the Longhorns. In short, Wright is a mobile, but not outright fast quarterback that has a good deep ball and is accurate on throws to the sidelines on intermediate and deep passes.
There will be limitations in terms of what Sark can scheme up for this offense against UTSA with Wright taking the reigns for the offense. But he still has the ability to hit the deep ball and some of the routes at least 10 yards downfield on the outside. That can still bring some punch to the passing game in Sark’s offense in the next couple of weeks.
There’s a good chance that Wright will be taking most of the quarterback snaps this weekend against UTSA. I also believe that senior running back Roschon Johnson could take at least a dozen snaps at quarterback in the wildcat formation, or even on some passing plays.
All in all, Sark wasn’t very open about the quarterback situation in the Monday press conference to say the very least. But we will continue to monitor if he mentions more about Wright potentially taking the first-team reps in practice this week.
