Wide receiver recruiting has largely come into focus in the last week or so for Texas football with decision day arriving on Sep. 21 for the highly touted four-star Longview wide receiver target Jalen Hale. Texas was considered just a few days ago to be in a great spot to land a commitment from Hale.

But it now looks like the momentum has largely shifted in favor of the Alabama Crimson Tide as decision day has arrived for Hale.

Hale was the top remaining wide receiver target for head coach Steve Sarkisian, new wide receivers coach/passing game coordinator Brennan Marion, and the Longhorns in the 2023 class at this point of the cycle.

With Alabama looking to be the destination for Hale, that could shift the focus for Texas wide receiver recruiting to the target that is clear-cut next up on the big board for the 2023 class, four-star Temple wideout/athlete Mikal Harrison-Pilot.

The signs now could be pointing to Texas sitting in the driver seat with Harrison-Pilot if Hale does what is expected and he picks Alabama over the Longhorns on Sep. 21.

Is Texas football now leading for 4-Star WR Mikal Harrison-Pilot

On Sep. 20, Texas received a forecast from On3 national recruiting analyst Sam Spiegelman with a good level of confidence to land a commitment from Harrison-Pilot. This is the most recent forecast/crystal ball for Harrison-Pilot, and it’s likely no coincidence that it’s coming a little less than 24 hours ahead of Hale’s commitment.

The On3 recruiting prediction machine also now gives Texas better than a 86 percent chance to land Harrison-Pilot’s commitment.

Moreover, there isn’t an exact decision timeline in place yet for Harrison-Pilot. He’s already taken official visits to see Texas (June 17) and the Cal Golden Bears (June 24). It looks like he’s now set to take an official visit to Fort Worth on the weekend of Sep. 30, for the important game between the TCU Horned Frogs and Oklahoma Sooners.

We should also expect an official visit to see the Houston Cougars from Harrison-Pilot this fall. I wouldn’t rule out him taking that fifth official visit this fall either before he’s ready to make a decision.

As Harrison-Pilot’s visit schedule comes together, that will be telling of how his decision timeline will formulate. If Texas picks up the pursuit of MHP in the coming days and weeks, though, that could speed up his decision timeline.

Texas currently holds commitments from 22 recruits in the 2023 class. The three wide receiver commits in the Longhorns 2023 class are DeSoto five-star Johntay Cook, Aldine Eisenhower four-star Ryan Niblett, and Spring Dekaney four-star Jonah Wilson.
