Watch: Texas football QB Quinn Ewers scores his first TD in Red River
Texas football got off to a good start in the Red River Rivalry game on the morning of Oct. 8 against the Oklahoma Sooners. Behind the return of redshirt freshman quarterback Quinn Ewers, the Texas offense was moving the ball early and often in the first half.
And while we didn’t see Ewers get on the board with his first career touchdown playing for the Longhorns in Red River against the Sooners in the first quarter, it still didn’t take too long for that to come to fruition. Ewers led the Longhorns on another 90+ yard scoring drive early in the second quarter to put his team up 14-0.
Ewers was pretty spotless in the first two drives of the game, completing nine of his 10 passing attempts for 121 yards and one touchdown.
That first touchdown pass of the game for Ewers came on a 10-yard completion to star sophomore wide receiver Xavier Worthy to put Texas up by two scores. That was the first touchdown of the game for both Ewers and Worthy.
It’s also noteworthy that this is the first touchdown connection of the season between Ewers and Worthy.
For Ewers, this was his third touchdown pass of the season. He had two touchdown tosses in the regular season opener on Sep. 3 against the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks.
Meanwhile, this is the fourth touchdown catch on the season, and the fifth from scrimmage, for Worthy. It’s also the fourth touchdown in the last six quarters for Worthy after he tallied up three total scores in the win last weekend at home over the West Virginia Mountaineers.
We hope to continue to see this insanely potent connection in the passing game between Ewers and Worthy. These two showed glimpses of the immense potential they have as a quarterback-to-wide receiver connection in the first quarter before Ewers was knocked out of the game with a shoulder injury against the Alabama Crimson Tide on Sep. 10.
Texas is currently sporting a record of 3-2 (1-1 Big 12) following the convincing 18-point win over West Virginia at home on Oct. 1. As of the halfway point of the second quarter approximately, Texas has a 14-0 lead over Oklahoma.
