4-Star RB commit Cedric Baxter reaffirms commitment to Texas football
Over the weekend, one of the highest-rated commitments in the 2023 Texas football recruiting class took a visit elsewhere. The highly touted four-star Edgewater (FL) running back and Texas commit Cedric Baxter Jr. visited the Florida State Seminoles unofficially for a game last weekend against the No. 5 Clemson Tiger in Tallahassee.
Despite taking another visit to a Florida school last weekend, it sounds like Baxter remains solid with his Texas commitment this fall. According to a report from Gerry Hamilton of Inside Texas on Oct. 19 (paid content), Baxter says that Texas “doesn’t have to worry about me flipping” after his unofficial visit to Florida State on Oct. 15.
Baxter noted that he still talks to new Texas running backs coach Tashard Choice “every day” and that head coach Steve Sarkisian connects often with him and his family too.
It’s also worth noting that Baxter mentioned in this interview with Inside Texas that he went to the Florida State game as a fan, not “as a recruit”. He did grow up a Florida State fan, so that does make sense.

Moreover, it sounds like there are still quite a few schools going all out to flip the commitment of Baxter from the Longhorns. I would put three of the gigantic in-state schools in Florida in that boat including the Florida Gators, Miami Hurricanes, and Florida State.
Last month, Baxter visited Florida unofficially for its big-time game weekend at The Swamp against the Utah Utes.
Baxter also unofficially visited the UCF Knights for a game in Orlando earlier this fall, so there could still be communication with them too. But that wasn’t mentioned in this IT report.
All in all, it’s hard to feel too worried about the status of Baxter’s commitment to Texas at this point in the recruitment. Baxter has reaffirmed his commitment to Texas on multiple occasions and is probably just doing his due diligence in visiting other schools this fall. That is nothing out of the ordinary.
At the moment, I don’t see any schools that realistically are a threat to flip Baxter’s commitment from Texas. And with the Early Signing Period less than a couple of months away now, I am pretty confident that Texas will be able to sign Baxter before anyone else has a shot to generate much momentum in this recruitment.
Texas currently holds commitments from 21 recruits in the 2023 class as of Oct. 19. There are two running back commits in the mix in the Longhorns 2023 class including Baxter and the touted four-star DeSoto product Tre Wisner.
