A Big 12 foe for Texas football is set to partake in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game on Jan. 9. New head coach Sonny Dykes and the No. 3 TCU Horned Frogs will battle the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs and head coach Kirby Smart in the national title game.

And one prominent figure on Steve Sarkisian’s staff with the Longhorns is set to be in attendance for the title game on Jan. 9. First-year Texas special assistant to the head coach and the former longtime TCU head coach Gary Patterson will attend the national title game between the Horned Frogs and Bulldogs, according to a report from Sports Illustrated last weekend.

Patterson reportedly said that attending the title game is the “right thing to do”. He will apparently “likely be seated in a suite or club box in the sparkling $6 billion SoFi Stadium”.

The former TCU head coach also told Horns247 this week that he still has a “bond with a lot of these” on the Horned Frogs squad.

Despite getting fired by TCU more than one year ago in favor of the former SMU Mustangs and Cal Golden Bears head coach Dykes, Patterson is still very much a supporter of the Horned Frogs. He’s continually shown his gratitude and support for the TCU program since he left Fort Worth for the special assistant to the head coach position in Austin.

He was even in attendance for TCU when it faced the Kansas State Wildcats in the Big 12 Championship Game in Arlington last month.

And since the Frogs made such a prominent postseason push, Patterson recently described TCU’s trip to the College Football Playoff as “bittersweet”.

I fully expect Patterson to be decked out in purple, supporting the program that he coached up over the course of roughly two decades in Fort Worth.

During his almost 22-season run as TCU’s head coach, Patterson posted a record of 181-79. That 22-year-run for Patterson with the Horned Frogs also included a dozen top-25 finishes in the AP Poll and 11 bowl wins.

Patterson just finished up his first season as Texas’ special assistant to the head coach, helping the Longhorns to a record of 8-5 (6-3 Big 12).
