The news dropped really soon after Texas basketball‘s NCAA Tournament exit last weekend in the Elite Eight at the hands of the five-seed Miami Hurricanes in the Midwest Region at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, MO. The two-seed Texas and interim head coach Rodney Terry fell short of Miami on March 26 by a score of 88-81.

Despite the loss, though, Terry still got some really good news from the Longhorns coming out of the weekend. Thanks to a really special postseason run that Terry led the Longhorns to this year, he was able to get the interim tag removed to become the next full-time Texas men’s hoops head coach.

The report emerged soon after Texas’ loss to Miami on the night of March 26 that Terry received an offer from the Longhorns to be the next full-time men’s hoops head coach. And it didn’t take too long after that report for the news to start to come out that Terry was getting a deal in place with the Texas brass to be announced as the next full-time head coach.

There is now a press conference scheduled for late in the morning on March 28 for Terry to be officially announced in front of the media.

Reported contract details for Rodney Terry as Texas basketball’s next head coach

A report from David Cobb of CBS Sports on March 27 also confirmed the multiple reports that Terry would be named Texas’ next full-time head coach this week.

This piece from CBS Sports early this week also mentioned the reported contract structure for Terry as Texas’ bench boss. Matt Norlander of CBS Sports tweeted out the contract details on the afternoon of March 27.

Terry and the Longhorns agreed to a five-year contract worth $15.3 million. Norlander also confirmed that the “majority of [the] deal was hashed out” late in the night of March 26 and early on March 27.

The deal makes Terry the 26th Texas men’s basketball head coach in the program’s history. This is also the third school that he’s held the title of full-time head coach at. He also coached the UTEP Miners and Fresno State Bulldogs from 2011-2021.
