It didn’t take long for something to come to fruition for the coaching search for the Texas basketball program to find the full-time replacement for former head coach Chris Beard. Texas reportedly offered the full-time head coaching job to interim head coach Rodney Terry on the night of March 26.

The offer to Terry was reported just after the loss for the two-seed Longhorns to the five-seed Miami Hurricanes in the Elite Eight in the Midwest Region on March 26, by a score of 88-81.

Once the Longhorns reportedly offered the full-time head coaching gig to Terry, I didn’t figure we would have to wait for all that long before getting wind of his decision heading into the offseason. And it sounds like Terry and the Longhorns are working on a deal as we speak on March 27.

A tweet from Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports late in the morning on March 27 reported that “Terry is finalizing a deal to be the next head coach at Texas”. He also mentioned in this tweet that “a press conference is expected this week” to announce the hiring of Terry as the next full-time Texas men’s hoops head coach.

A write-up from David Cobb of CBS Sports on March 27 also reported that Texas is working on a deal to promote Terry to have the interim tag removed ahead of the 2023-24 college hoops season.

Cobb noted in this piece early this week that Terry has close ties and connections with the program and the school and that he has earned the respect of this locker room and his staff.

"By promoting Terry, Longhorns athletic director Chris Del Conte is turning to someone with deep ties to the state who earned the respect of the players on the current roster during a challenging season. Terry is from the Houston suburbs and was an assistant at Texas under Rick Barnes from 2002-11."

This is still a developing story, and we will be following it every step of the way as the Longhorns and Terry could reportedly soon be getting a deal done to complete this coaching search before it had a chance to get off the ground this offseason.

Texas finished up the 2022-23 season with a record of 29-9 (12-6 Big 12) following the seven-point loss to Miami in the Elite Eight over the weekend. Terry and the Longhorns made the deepest postseason run for this program in more than a decade while also claiming the Big 12 Men’s Tournament crown earlier this month.
