New full-time head coach Rodney Terry and the Texas basketball program suffered their first loss to the NCAA Transfer Portal of the 2023 offseason this weekend. Freshman guard and former highly touted four-star recruit Rowan Brumbaugh had his intentions to enter the transfer portal reported on the night of April 7.

After spending just one year at Texas, Brumbaugh will be testing the waters in the transfer portal with all four years of eligibility remaining. Brumbaugh took a redshirt year during his true freshman campaign last season.

Although, that’s not to say that Brumbaugh didn’t have a bright future on the Forty Acres. Brumbaugh is a top-100-rated recruit that has a lot of talent and potential at the point guard position. He was a big late-cycle get for former Texas head coach Chris Beard in the 2022 class. But the plans for Brumbaugh to contribute to the backcourt unit were longer-term than those for other underclassmen guards on the roster such as sophomore Tyrese Hunter and freshman Arterio Morris.

Who could be the next portal departure for Texas basketball after Rowan Brumbaugh

Brumbaugh adds to the guard losses for Terry and the Longhorns this offseason. Texas has now lost three guards from last season’s squad, also including seniors Marcus Carr and Sir’Jabari Rice. There is also a chance Texas could lose Hunter, who declared early for the 2023 NBA Draft while maintaining his collegiate eligibility this offseason.

Terry’s busy offseason schedule got a little bit more stringent this spring with the loss of Brumbaugh. He’s got a lot of work to do this offseason to build out the roster for the 2023-24 campaign. But I think that was a given when he took the full-time job a couple of weeks ago.

Here’s a look at the possibilities for the next transfer departure for Terry and the Longhorns after Brumbaugh entered the portal on April 7.
