Predicting Texas basketball’s next portal loss after Rowan Brumbaugh
Arterio Morris, G
I would assume that the biggest threat among the remaining Longhorns players were waiting on decisions from last season’s squad as to whether they will return to school next year is Morris. The Dallas, TX, native and former elite five-star recruit out of Dallas Kimball High School has yet to inform the Texas coaching staff whether he plans to return to school next season from what we’ve heard so far this offseason.
Morris is an important player for Terry and the Longhorns to get back in the fold next season. He started to become a more critical part of the backcourt unit down the stretch last season as a two-way energy player off the bench.
In the Big 12 Tournament, Morris had two outings where he put up at least eight points and two steals off the bench while shooting at least roughly 45 percent from the field. Morris also showed last season that he can thrive when he’s put in a brighter spotlight. In the seven games that Morris played at least 17 minutes off the bench, he scored in double figures all but twice. And the two he didn’t score in double figures, he posted eight and nine points in each game.
Morris could clearly be a big piece of the backcourt unit next season given all the departures that Texas is facing at the guard position this offseason. He’s got all the talent in the world, as an energetic two-way guard with NBA tools at 6-foot-3 and 190-pounds.
I think another year at Texas could make a world’s difference for Morris. But the fact of the matter is that Morris appears to still be deciding whether he wants to return to Texas next season. He’s probably not going to declare for the 2023 NBA Draft, so that would leave returning to Texas or entering the transfer portal as the two most likely options he would take.
