Ole Miss

The most obvious potential landing spot that comes to mind when thinking about Brumbaugh’s next stop out of the portal this offseason is with Beard and Ole Miss Rebels in the SEC.

Beard is the coach that really swung Brumbaugh’s recruitment in Texas’ favor in the 2022 class. And it looks as if the plan that Beard and the Longhorns staff had for Brumbaugh was for him to be one of the future key guards in the backcourt unit.

Yet, the fact that Texas fired Beard a few months ago could be one of the big factors that caused Brumbaugh to enter the portal early this offseason.

And if he still wants to play for Beard, he could find his next home in Oxford with Ole Miss. There are definitely a lot of reasons why Brumbaugh could want to take his talents to Oxford ahead of the 2023-24 season.

Ole Miss is in dire need of some impact guard that can help rejuvenate a lacking backcourt unit. Ole Miss was one of the worst teams in the SEC last season (posting a record of just 3-15 in conference play), and its lack of quality guard play was one of the contributing factors.

A good indicator of the overall impact that basketball players have on their team is box plus/minus (an advanced metric that estimates the number of points per 100 possessions a player contributes to their team).

According to Sports Reference, Ole Miss was one of just three teams in the SEC last season to not have a single guard that registered a box plus/minus of at least 3.0.

I should also mention that Ole Miss doesn’t have a single underclassman returning to the backcourt unit for next season that averaged more than three points per game during the 2022-23 campaign.

It’s clear that Beard and the Rebels are in need of some talented guards to fill out depth in the backcourt unit. From that perspective, along with the obvious ties that Beard has to Brumbaugh from his time at Texas, this connection would make sense for the former Longhorn guard to land in Oxford this offseason.
